Five signs of pregnancy

What are the top five signs of early pregnancy?

Feeling unusually tired? Fatigue can set in the first few weeks after conception. Mood swings are also common.

  1. Do certain smells upset you? You are not alone! Seven out of 10 pregnant women experience nausea or vomiting. Morning sickness happens in the early weeks of the first trimester, but there are ways to overcome it.
  2. If your periods have been regular, missing a period may signal that a baby is on the way.
  3. Your tummy may feel bloated, and your pants feel a little tight these days.
  4. Are your breasts swollen and tender? This is another clue that you have an impending pregnancy.

Why do these symptoms occur?

From the moment of conception, your body begins preparations to give your baby everything he needs to grow. That means you’re working overtime—and you’re exhausted.

Hormones produced during pregnancy cause a variety of other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, bloat, and breast tenderness.

What can you do to make your pregnancy healthy?

Eat:

  • Stick to a healthy diet filled with essential nutrients such as fiber, choline and DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. DHA-rich foods fuel your baby’s brain development during pregnancy.6
  • Folic acid is a critical nutrient to protect your baby from birth defects. Take a supplement upon your doctor’s advice, or eat folate-rich food such as dark green vegetables, like broccoli and spinach, eggs, and oranges.

Do:

  • Consult your doctor and take a pregnancy test for a definitive answer.
